SNP’s West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine candidate slams “unworkable, cruel and performative” Rwanda Bill

18/01/24

The price cap on energy bills went up again just over a fortnight ago. Inflation last month went up instead of down. The Bank of England interest rate remains at 5.25%. The cost of living crisis rolls on and on.

But what were Scottish Conservative MPs voting for last night, Wednesday 17 January, in Westminster? The Rwanda Bill – a cruel, unworkable, expensive and performative slice of goonery concocted to dampen vicious infighting in the very Conservative Party that conceived it.

The Rwanda Bill does nothing for the people of West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine, it does nothing to establish safe and legal routes into the UK for those wishing to seek asylum, it does nothing for sodden people in wee boats in the Channel, it won’t deter people smugglers but it will further shred the UK’s international reputation and has even been described as “state-sponsored people trafficking”.

So of course the current Conservative MP for West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine, Andrew Bowie, voted for it. He would, wouldn’t he?

The SNP MPs voted against because it was the right thing to do – and I would have done the same.
