The upcoming Westminster Election requires you to have proof of identity when voting. This is the first election in Scotland that this is happening in.

If you do not have proof of ID then you can register for a voter authority certificate here.

Research has shown that it’s possible that 1.1 million fewer people will go out to vote in the next election due to this new rule, most of these people will come from already marginalised backgrounds.

It is therefore important that we all do our best to make sure as many people as possible are aware that they have to have their ID with them when they go to vote.

As a British Citizen, it is a right to vote in an election. Please do not get caught out and let our voices be heard.

Another option is to sign up for a Postal Vote. This is an option if you do not wish to show ID at the polling station or you think you might not make it to the polls on the day.

Voter ID that you can use on election days includes:

  • a United Kingdom passport
  • a passport issued by an EEA state or a Commonwealth country
  • a licence to drive a motor vehicle granted under Part 3 of the Road Traffic Act 1988 or the Road Traffic (Northern Ireland) Order 1981
